History of the hotel “France”

The history of the hotel “France” begins in the distant nineteenth century, when the Austro-Hungarian subject, Yevgeny Prunmeier asks permission of the Vinnytsia city government for the old building and construction in its place of the new one.
The construction of a three -storey building with an iron roof and a large basement was planned.
The new building was build in the style of the provincial Boz -Aara (fr. – guilty of art). It is one of the eclectic architectural styles that spread in the second half of the nineteenth century. This style, born of the Paris School of Fine Arts, based on the use of elements of classical Italian and French architecture, is characterized by harsh symmetry, rich decor and stucco, figure inserts, etc.

In 1902, Prunmayer leased the hotel to Mr Theophilus Yankovsky, who became the hotel and opened a confectionery. He changed his name in favor of his name – “Yankovsky Hotel”. Obviously, Theophilus faced troubles of business because of renaming , so the inscription on the facade of the hotel looked like: “Yankovsky’s hotel, the former French.”During Soviet Union, the rooms had a lot of functions. According to the memoirs of the Vinnytsia Solomon Winstein (writer under the name Neil Kras), for a while there was an oncology dispensary, an operating room whose windows were with views on main street. And on the ground floor were food establishments.

Until recently was located cafe “Light” – the legendary restaurant of Vinnytsia.
